Owned and Independently Published Newspaper
Years of Tradition, Community and Family
The
Houston Forward Times was founded in January 1960, under
the leadership of the late founder and publisher, Julius
P. Carter. Since his death in 1971, it has been under
the great leadership of his widow, CEO/Publisher Lenora
Carter.
The Houston Forward Times has grown consistent
with the growth of the African American population in
Houston. Today it is the largest independently owned
and operated African-American newspaper published in
the South/Southwest area.
The Houston Forward Times has been the strongest
voice for African Americans in the city of Houston for
47 years, a position that this newspaper is uniquely
qualified to command.
The Houston Forward Times is a major source of
positive news about accomplishments of African-Americans.
More space is devoted to African American progress than
any other media. It is a proven fact that African Americans
are interested in media that is interested in them--the
media that brings them news they cant find elsewhere
and because of this, The Houston Forward Times stays
in the home from week to week.
The Houston Forward Times has the credibility that
African-Americans have come to rely on and is trusted
to be the media that proudly expresses the African-American
point of view on community affairs.
Through the years, The Houston Forward Times
has been the recipient of various awards for journalistic
excellence including best graphic designs, layout, circulation
and editorial excellence and the list goes on.
The Houston Forward Times has grown in readership
to over 75% of the African-American population in the
city of Houston because the focus of the articles are
based on community, current events, entertainment, religion,
employment opportunities and political functions. Every
aspect of The Houston Forward Times is directed to the
readers and their needs. The Houston Forward Times also
devotes space to the younger generation, giving a voice
to children in the weekly reporting of the African-American
community.

nationally. The most recent prestigious award was received
from the Press Club of Houston for excellence in Journalism
